A Study Assessing the Intermodal Transportation Pathways of Ammonia

24 Oct 2024
E-Fuels and Hydrogen Propulsion

This presentation will review a study, carried out by ILF Consulting Engineers, on the pipeline transport of hydrogen and ammonia as well as the conversion of hydrogen into ammonia, maritime shipping of ammonia and cracking at the destination. It compares different intermodal transportation pathways that consist of a combination of the aforementioned solutions.
Ammonia pipelines have been assessed indicating technical and safety-related characteristics as well as economics of ammonia pipeline transport. The study reveals relevant potential for ammonia pipeline transport especially when ammonia is used directly as fuel for power generation or as educt for the fertilizer industry provided that save operation can be ensured.
Maritime transport of ammonia is the most promising option for very long distance and high scale energy transportation. The study gives deep technical insights on currently available ammonia synthesis, storage, shipping and cracking technologies and points out further development need and potential. Public information on ammonia transport are scarcely available which is why the corresponding findings are a unique feature of the study.
