We have recently made our proprietary CO₂-MOFs available as a versatile platform technology for point-source CO₂ capture, enabling companies to create effective carbon capture systems.
What’s the problem?
Energy production and industrial processes are responsible for 65% of the world’s CO₂ emissions - that is 23.8 gigatons of new CO₂ emission per year. Currently, only 0.05 gigatons of CO₂ are captured from point-source.
What’s the solution?
We have developed two scalable MOFs for CO₂ capture! Our revolutionary MOFs allow low-cost, large-scale, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly point-source CO₂ capture in energy production and industrial processes.
Why are MOFs better than amines?
MOFs are recognized as the most promising alternative to the state-of-the-art technology of amine scrubbing and are deployed where the use of amines is limited/prohibited. Amine scrubbing has been used since 1930 and is a robust technology, but also has noteworthy limitations.
Limitations of the amine technology:
- high CO₂ capture costs
- requires a larger footprint
- requires access to large, high-temperature energy sources such as steam
- concerns around safety, health and environment
MOFs are operated in compact temperature- and/or pressure-swing adsorption systems (TSA and/or PSA), consume 2-3x less energy and allow the use of low-temperature heat sources and can be composed of safe and environmentally-friendly components.
Why our proprietary MOFs?
- Efficiency: low energy consumption, our MOFs capture CO₂ with high capacity using low-temperature/waste heat (regeneration at 90 °C) with demonstrated success at 2.5 t CO₂ per year scale.
- Economical: high-yield, scalable production, so that these MOFs can be sourced at megaton-scale.
- Sustainable: green, biodegradable materials used, including abundant metals and recyclable components.
- Tunability / adaptability: works in humid gas streams and it’s applicable in TSA, PSA and combinations thereof (TVSA). Resistant to typical contaminants like SOₓ and NOₓ.
