Testing of Hydrogen-Carrying Components

Sonplas GmbH Hall: A2 Stand: 2C40
Testing of Hydrogen-Carrying Components
With the test bench, Sonplas enables manufacturers of hydrogen-carrying components to test their parts for functionality and durability

Sonplas draws on more than 25 years of expertise in fuel injection and offers customers comprehensive consulting and service solutions. The special-purpose machine manufacturer enables producers of hydrogen-carrying components, which are used in fuel cells and hydrogen combustion engines, to test these components for both functionality and durability. This ensures that components meet the demands of series production. Upon request, Sonplas also builds custom test benches and suitable containers for safe operation.

Hydrogen plays an important role in clean mobility. Unlike fossil fuels, green hydrogen propulsion does not release CO2. Hydrogen has a wide range of applications, including its use in hydrogen combustion engines and fuel cells, for both stationary and mobile use.

To ensure the series maturity of a hydrogen powertrain, precise functional tests on hydrogen-carrying components are necessary. “We can draw on a wealth of know-how in the injection of conventional fuels,” says Werner Riederer, Sales Engineer at Sonplas GmbH, based in Straubing, Bavaria. “We see numerous synergies in the testing processes and equipment for hydrogen-carrying components. This enabled us to develop our H2 test bench in a very short time.”

Through function and durability tests, the user ensures that the component meets the necessary requirements and operates effectively during series production. Alongside function tests, including flow rate assessment and analysis of flow characteristics, we also provide dynamic pressure measurements and leakage tests. Additionally, durability tests up to 50 hours are also possible. The user has the option to test components for both fuel cells and combustion engines. “We also assist our customers with safety and explosion protection concerns,” explains Riederer.

A wide range of components, varying in size, can be tested within the chamber. These tests are performed in an inertized thermal chamber, which also allows for precise temperature control. Should a client require testing services beyond the current capabilities of the test bench, it can be modularly expanded to accommodate their needs. Sonplas experts are on hand to provide thorough consulting in these cases.

In addition to enabling customers to conduct tests at the Hydrogen Test Center, Sonplas also offers the option to purchase a fully equipped test center, complete with a test bench, allowing customers to establish their own hydrogen testing infrastructure. “Our container-based test bench is unique in the market,” notes Riederer. “Typically, customers receive individual components that they must design and assemble themselves, rather than a comprehensive solution.” With Sonplas' all-in-one solution, clients can rely on a streamlined, single-source solution for their testing needs.
