AMBARtec offers compact hydrogen storage systems with very high energy density, using iron oxide nuggets as the storage material.
During storage, the added hydrogen reduces the iron oxide. When hydrogen is withdrawn, water vapour is fed into the storage system. This oxidises the iron and releases hydrogen. Practical tests have confirmed the excellent energy balance of the entire process, from hydrogen production to loading and transport to hydrogen release.
The systems are suitable for highly efficient energy storage and the transport of hydrogen, including intercontinental transport, using conventional transport logistics.
In collaboration with Rouge H2 Engineering AG, AMBARtec offers an alternative process based on iron oxide nuggets to produce very pure hydrogen from dirty gases, such as blast furnace gases and synthesis gases from biogenic residues or sewage sludge. When used alongside CCS/U, this steam iron process has the potential to make steelworks climate-neutral at a reasonable cost.
