GAIL and LanzaTech to evaluate pilot scale CO2 capture and conversion project

by | Jul 21, 2023

India-based natural gas company GAIL, and LanzaTech, a CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) business have formed a strategic partnership which will see the pair investigating carbon recycling technology in combination with green hydrogen. The proposed project will see LanzaTech drawing on its knowledge of CCU, and GAIL on its expertise within the areas of renewable hydrogen and carbon gas streams.

The duo will investigate the establishment of a pilot scale CO2 capture and conversion project which will act as a role model for converting carbon into useful materials – including fuels, chemicals, packaging and clothing.

“CO2 can be the raw material of the future, enabling fossil carbon to stay underground,” said Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, CEO of LanzaTech and a board member of the US-India strategic partnership. “We look forward to launching our collaboration with GAIL to make this vision a reality.”

LanzaTech’s bio recycling technology uses bacteria which consumes CO2-rich pollutants found in industrial sites. The bacteria are then converted to produce CarbonSmart chemicals which can be used to manufacture rubber, plastics, synthetic fibers and fuels.

The materials produced using LanzaTech’s technology are used within a wide range of consumer goods and within sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The process promotes sustainability and reduces company dependance on virgin fossil fuels.
