Saipem introduces Bluenzyme, a carbon capture process with reduced environmental impact

by | Sep 11, 2023

Bluenzyme is the new sustainable solution for CO2 capture which reduces environmental impact and works by using a non-toxic, non-volatile solvent which is based on the use of the carbonic anhydrase enzyme. Bluenzyme™ 200 is the first industrialised product with a nominal capture capacity of 200 tonnes of CO2 per day. This enzyme, carbonic anhydrase was chosen as the model as it is the most powerful natural catalyst suitable for the capture of carbon dioxide. This chemical is naturally found in all living organisms as it is required for the exchange of CO2 during respiration.

Saipem researched into this chemical and from this created a high-performance industrial solution for CO2 capture which is more environmentally sustainable and more cost-effective than the traditional process. These improvements are made possible because the technology used is suitable for the use of recoverable heat from low temperature sources.

This innovative advancement, Blueenzyme, has been designed as a plug-and-play system which will work for different industrial sectors including, oil and gas, petrochemicals, energy and cement production and for multiple other sectors where decarbonisation represents an integral step towards achieving carbon neutrality targets. The product is applied to post-combustion emissions from new or existing plants and its design is modular, compact and flexible, allowing it to easily adapt to any plant. Bluenzyme also reduces project execution time, costs and risks as it is developed off-site with standardized production processes and strict quality controls. The product is then installed at the site and the reduction of this time and cost, whilst ensuring the product is built correctly, make it a cost-effective, sustainable industry solution that is becoming quickly available. It was announced that the first industrialised product is Bluenzyme™ 200, with a nominal capture capacity of 200 tonnes of CO2 per day

The Chief Commercial Officer at Saipem, Fabrizio Botta, said, “We are proud to be able to offer our customers the Bluenzyme™ 200 solution, an off-the-shelf product based on proprietary technology that is the result of our relentless commitment to research and development of increasingly flexible, efficient and sustainable solutions. BluenzymeTM200 represents a concrete solution to allow companies to reach their ESG goals and move closer to the target of a zero-carbon future that Saipem is striving to achieve.”
